Contest: Name the New Software
While we’re waiting, let’s have a little contest. I don’t have any prizes to give away, but maybe I’ll come up with one. Maybe the SolidWorks 2007 Little Red Book in Chinese. I’ve got a few of those to give away.
On the other blog, Billy Oliver, a former SolidWorks user, came up with a great idea. The “new” SolidWorks, or Catia Lite if you prefer, is tragically without an official name. And we can’t talk about the current new software (2013) because of some pesky NDA, and 2012 – well – that’s just so last year. So here we have a blog, with nothing to talk about. I’m ready to start writing about cell phones.
We must fix this misfortune. We need a new name for the new software. This is the contest.
We have to have some rules. Only one rule. You can’t use the word “SolidWorks” in the name. This software isn’t going to look like SolidWorks or work like SolidWorks or even be developed by SolidWorks, so we can’t put that name on the software. They didn’t put that name on their new building, so we’re just following their example here.
Let the games begin.

Not a lot going on in Solidworks land lately…um, let me see… how about Catia-i-X? Of course the thing to do with the results of a competition like this is to buy up the domain names of all combos of the most attractive ones…. No hold on Ive announced brilliant ideas like that before and Autodesk were listening… so I’d better suggest a red herring entry as well with a redirecting jingle…. How about — DSS CLOUDUTOPIA — were the perfect simulated modeling universe exist’s in the cloud’s.
Seeing how PTC was brave enough to kill off the name Pro/ENGINEER, it’s indeed very likely new SolidWorks will be called very different also.
Medium. In the psychic, intuitive sense. Leaves thematic space for Catia to be repositioned as Large, too.
Or since we are bring the “Cloud” down to the ground, everything is fuzzy and when you turn on the lights it gets harder to see what is going on that we call it…”Fog”
Then in the Help or documentation you remove the “FAQ” section and add the “FA Q” section!! I’m proabably gonna get in trouble for that last one…I just never understood how we got away with “FAQ” anyway..pronounce it once.
I still like AlmostWorks.
It already has a name that has been given to every software that no customer has ever seen, is only talked about in a future state with little to no verifiable facts, and is supposed to fix everything… It is called “VapourWare”!
Maybe it’ll be released before we’ve all moved to SolidEdge. Maybe it’ll have some geometry creation tools and not just PLM. Maybe you’ll have an internet connection so you can get some work done.

Dassault’s Deception – so many have been “deceived” and have little to no idea of what to expect in the future – and the future is important.
It will not be Solid, and will not Work so Solidworks is out. The new style is a name that has; special characters, is not pronouncable, not memorable, and has no relation to the product function.
