Sometimes the inventors you work with have expectations that they don’t necessarily communicate. I can’t count the number of times I ask “when” do you want this, and the only answer I get back is “as soon as possible”. Well, I’ve got 4 other projects that are all supposed to be delivered “as soon as possible”. The soonest I can possibly do this is two weeks from now… Is that what you meant, or did you mean that you needed this yesterday? This was one of those projects. On top of being an engineer, and a bit of an artist, and my own IT guy, design contract people also have to be a psychologist and a mind reader, as well as time-travel expert.
Anyway, it’s always a bit of a challenge to figure out who is in charge of what in a project. I don’t care who’s in charge, as long as we establish that up front. If you want me to take the design and run with it, that’s fine, I like that. I don’t like doing the same work over again 4 times. It’s too bad when other stuff gets in the way of a good design. Good communication is part of good product design.
