Free Solid Edge software for Students
If you’re a student (of any age), you can get a license of Solid Edge ST4 for free (legally!). ST4 has tools to allow you to have both highly sophisticated control over your model using parametric and history-based methods AND the ease-of-use associated with direct-edit, push-and-pull modeling. Solid Edge is serious engineering software, with I think the best interface in the industry.
The Solid Edge folks will even hook you up with tutorials and email tips.
There are some limitations, such as the student license isn’t compatible with the commercial version, so you’re not gonna do moonlighting on the side with free software. 2D Drawings are watermarked. A university version also exists which has more capability, and is intended to be implemented by a learning institution.
Anyway, at FREE, this is software worth having, and with the job market the way it is, you might as well spend your time doing something that will benefit you later on. Click on either image to go get some Solid Edge!
I’ve got around to installing this tonight after downloading almost 2 weeks ago. Strange environment…ribbons and buried options…back in newbie territory 😉
Digging around I found ST4 has conic blends in ordered mode! when did this arrive?? havent found how to edit the rho after creation though. can you do that? hmmm only radius it seems..
Interesting experience cos I havent actually tried SE since 2001-2 ie. before I settled on SW. First impression is its not too bad 🙂 better than I remember it anyway with 3 planes in the middle..will see how re-education and appraisal goes over the year.
I should mention its a 2.2 gb download and occupies 2.6gb installed on XP.

how to download solid edge st4
I don’t get the point, though, besides the friendly image it sends in terms of marketing. Wouldn’t students get their hands on it if they wanted anyway?
And it is not like they are doing commercial projects with it so it’s not all that harmful, it just gets them prepared to become solid edge users at companies with paying seats of solid edge.
Nevertheless, it can’t possibly be a bad thing either, so, nice job Siemens.
Andy – Note quite the same. You actually had to be registered for a course of SE at the school in order to get the download. Elementary, Jr. High, High School, College, VoTech – doesn’t matter now. Synchronous Technology alone makes this a great deal.
@Andy
The prior program required individual schools purchase a low cost educational site license which then allowed the school to issue licenses to students. This program still exists.
The new program allows any student to download the software directly from Siemens PLM.
Matt,
I think this has always been the case. When I was in school 10 years ago we were able to get free SolidEdge. I think I still have my Version 9 disk somewhere collecting dust.
