Interview with Fielder Hiss
Fielder is another tech support alumn who has been promoted in the organization. Fielder is now the Director of Product Management. The tech support people are probably the best ones to have in positions like this since they know first hand about customer pain due to bugs and quirks.
In this interview Fielder gives us a run down of what he does and how they make decisions at SolidWorks. Interview in three YouTube parts:
Fielder did 22 interviews at SolidWorks World. I selected him because I thought he was a name I knew that most other people didn’t know, but that looks to have been a wrong assumption. I can’t imagine doing 22 half hour interviews over the course of 3 days. That’s a lot of work.
Thanks to Fielder, and also to Laura K and Nancy B for setting this up.
Great question though, Matt, there’s really no efficient way?
Isnt there a macro around that does this for dwgs? hold on…in my collection..

I have a question about templates. For example i already have created a template for assem., part and drawing. On my old part, assem. and drawing is there way that i can incorporate the template to my old files??..wat i think is that it will not work. I only have 1 year of experience with SW. thanks!
Right, it’s not going to work. SolidWorks does not have a convenient way to take template settings and distribute them to a set of existing files.
I’m having a hard time making a link that will display the SW-Configuration Name on my drawings. I’m editing the sheet, inserting a note via the annotations tab and clicking on the link to property icon and selecting “Component to which the annotation is attached” and then choosing SW-Configuration Name (Configuration Name)
I save the template but the drawing doesn’t display the configuration name of the part or assembly. Any ideas? Thank you.
heeh this reminds me of some loss of features. Shall we say. I recall back in the day we used to be able to change how a file read its settings. From the settings saved within the part/asm/drw file or apply the global settings that you had set on your machine. It was good because you could get a file by someone that has no idea that its ridiculously painful to model with annotations literally 2 inches high so with a click of a check box, viola! Back to bliss that is your own preferred settings. 🙂
aahh the good old days when functionality wasnt taken out of new software. 😉
