Looking Forward to ST6
There aren’t a ton of details out yet, but we know a few things. I don’t want anyone to break any NDA’s or anything, but what kinds of things are you most looking forward to in Solid Edge ST6? Is there some request that you’ve made that you’re looking forward to seeing in June?
We keep hearing about the new surfacing. This is what I’m most looking forward to. If the surfacing is all it’s cracked up to be, it might finally be a replacement for my daily driver CAD.
Hey Carlos, can we get one of those mowers to Solid Edge University? 😉
Karsten
Hi Karsten,
I’m sure we can get one, as well as some of those coffee capsules machine by Delta that were also designed with Solid Edge. Problem is how to get them there. I can speak with both companies to know if there is a U.S. distributor for them. Let me know if you want me to move forward on this subject.
Carlos
Surfacing! We made a lot of requests based on inputs from our customers, mainly Industrial Designers that feel the lack of some surfacing capabilities. And still they can do things like this:
Carlos… great work. I’m sure there were frustrations along the way when designing that mower, but with a little bit of effort Solid Edge can usually get you there, or at least close. Let’s hope ST6 not only makes Surfacing easier but if they get Synchronous to play well with it, all the better.

The image looks like a (very nice) render, is this unit in production or is it just design concept?
Roger
Hi Roger,
The unit is in production. In fact, we had one for an exhibition regarding products developed with Solid Edge. Here is the web site of the lawn mower company: http://www.dormak.pt/

Thanks Carlos, very cool.
I’m definitely looking out for some more surfacing capability. SE is good but it needs to be able to do more for me to move over from SW without unduly penalising myself. I am realistic about the extent of that accomodation though because I full well realise ID stuff hasnt been their focus and regular customers will be wanting them to do enhancements suited to their own needs. I’m kind of hoping ST6 will work in well with Rhino (used with Tsplines) as well and that I can get a decent .obj + .mtl out of it to use in mainstream cg apps for animation and rendering. I would be even happier if they have gone out of their way and made the UI flow a little better for creative work or made it a little easier for ex SW users to pick up. Quite honestly though I have been impressed that Dan even made himself available to ask SW refugees what we might like and that they actually appear to have gone away and done something to satisfy at least some of our wants and wishes. Thats pretty encouraging to me in regard of my own future self interests and a welcome change from the struggle we have with DS to commit and deliver truly useful stuff for SW. Most of all in that regard I’m looking forward to leaving the uncertainty and crap behind and entering into a positve go ahead relationship with my CAD provider again. I dont think ST6 is going to disappoint me. I’m going to be a bit perturbed though if it doesnt quite hit the spot though cos I’m sort of relying on SE to be the best escape route from the CAD monster that is The Cloud.
