SolidWorks 2013 Bible

This cover is actually a Photoshop job. The new Wiley Bible cover template looks like this, but I’m not sure what it will look like exactly.

The new edition of the SolidWorks Bible is getting ready to go out. The technical editor for this version has been Eddie Cyganik, long time CAD admin. I’ve known Eddie since before 2000. Past editors have been Charles Culp and Ricky Jordan. Each editor brings a little personal focus. If you look on Amazon, this book won’t be out until May, which is an awfully long time. The editing is nearly done. I’m thinking this might be ready in February. This is the drag of writing for an actual print publisher. They are so slow to get stuff out.

This year, the cover is changing for the Bible series, so I don’t get to put a picture of a fun model on it. The first year the book was published, 2007, Wiley wanted to put a drafting board on the cover. I went into convulsions. I mean, there are a number of mistakes you could make in putting a picture on the cover of a CAD book, but this was just about the worst I could imagine, aside from maybe a plain dark grayish-brown cover.

Anyway, there are a lot of new things in this version because it covers 2012 and 2013. Plus, this edition has all been brought back into a single volume again. (The 2011 edition was divided into Parts and Assemblies). The whole book will be in the range of 1200 pages again.

Included with this are downloadable files for each chapter and a set of video introductions. So no CD/DVD, everything is download this year.

I’ll let you know when I get news about a real release date, but I usually get better information from Amazon than Wiley.

  1. @Chris
The Wiley site says March. After I finished the 2013 Bible, I recorded video tutorials for a basic course. The video tutorials will be available before the print book from the huge publisher.

I like print format for certain reasons, but electronic format is sooooooo much easier to deal with. And 200 year old publishers…(giant eye roll…)

  2. I am very excited about the book. I haven’t purchased in a few years but will get it this year as a company resource (and to personally brush up). Don’t sweat the cover. The contents make it.

  3. Correct. And the article reformats itself for every 1/8″ move of the mouse.

I’ll try one more time to hit “Post Comment”. Let’s see how long it will take me to hit the button. đŸ™‚

  4. Matt, the new blog interface is restless. It jumps all over the place, based on my mouse movements. Even now, typing this comment, I have to avert my eyes from the screen because it is dizzying to see it having a life of its own.

I can provide a little video, so you see what I see, if needed.

Oops, I am trying for 5 minutes now to select the “Post Comment” button.

    1. Alin, yeah, I’ll want to see that. What browser? I’m in Firefox, and it looks good. Also, what screen width? This is a mobile-friendly theme, which might do funny stuff at narrow window widths.

  5. Congratulations Matt! I understand the huge efforts and the hard work because I write Solidworks tutorials for a Mechanical engineering book in Italy . The earnings ate very low (at least in my country), therefore I think that people who write these books must have a great passion for sharing their knowledge.

Are you planning to do an update of the surgacing bible ? I think it’s out of print now.

    Alex

    1. You know, the publisher, Wiley, isn’t going to do an update. But that frees me to do it on my own. I’m going to try to start working on it in the new year. Thanks for asking.

  6. Give it a ‘Bible’ style leather print look… keep the black top and bottom, just a Bible like old leather print, no need to go overboard with textures :o)
