Solid Edge News
There were two news items about Solid Edge this week that caught my eye. One was that the International Standards Organization (ISO) has adopted Siemens JT format as an ISO standard format for file sharing. JT is a great format that can contain lightweight viewing data similar to eDrawings, or it can contain full NURBS model data. JT models can be used right alongside full native models in Solid Edge. It can contain PMI (product manufacturing information), as well as metadata for inclusion into PDM systems. If you’re looking for a good JT viewer, Glovius is made by Geometric, the same people that do eDrawings. There is a free version as well as a couple of paid versions which allow advanced measure and markup, as well as some additional data types.
JT getting widely adopted like this is good for users of Siemens PLM software.
The second piece of news is that 3D Sync is being offered as a new product for about $2000. But better news is that its free to use for “a limited time”. 3D Synch sounds like Synchronous Technology offered as a stand alone product. If you work at a place where you have problems working with imported data frequently, this might be a good tool for you to look into. Full blown ST can b e found in either Solid Edge or NX. 3DSync appears to be the 3D portion of Solid Edge on its own. I have a feeling this might be meant to compete more with Spaceclaim. There are a couple of video demos which will look familiar if you are a Solid Edge user. But you need to check out using Synchronous in assemblies. It’s so much better than in-context relations.
Matt,
Siemens also offers a free JT viewer, called JT2GO (link provided).
