SWW13: Monday Morning

***updates from the press conference following the main session at the bottom***

For those who didn’t follow it live, my comments and the comments of others I thought were important are listed below. The Twitter stream was maybe 1/3 of what it has been in previous years. A couple of things to take from this:

  • SolidWorks Mechanical Concept
  • My.SolidWorks.com
  • eDrawings for Android

And that’s really it. So SolidWorks Mechanical Concept was the big announcement, and it’s not even going to be available in beta until May, available for customers in the Fall. To me, from the images shown, it looked like a 2D mechanism designer. That’s really disappointing news, even to a skeptic.

The second thing was My.SolidWorks.Com, which is also not fully functional yet. It sounds like it will be a NetVibes-like configurable portal for all SolidWorks info.

Bertrand Sicot says that eDrawings for Android is coming “very very soon”. Somehow the Twitter feed missed this until after the main session was over.

I’d be a little annoyed if I had gone to Orlando looking primarily for info on V6. Maybe tomorrow…

This will be updated throughout the day Monday….

Rob Rodriguez says “This graphic scares me.”

Brian McElyea: SolidWorks Mechanical Conceptual

SolidWorks Mechanical Conceptual saves to the cloud “so you never have to worry about versions, crashes” according to Monica Schnitger. “…blend of history, direct, and ‘learns’ how parts are used”.

Rob Rodriguez adds ” conceptual, social, instinctive, connected…The buzz words”, “Available for beta in May, Oct, Nov availability.” ” Can DS meet any deadlines on software release? SERIOUSLY!”

Evan Yares: “Dassault announces Solidworks Mechanical Conceptual Fusion 360?”

(matt), SMC looks like a 2d sketcher for mechanisms, which have been around for decades.

Monica Schnitger: “Bernard Charles did a great job of explaining DS’ vision & how integral SW is to that & reconfirmed vestment in brand.”

Chad Jackson: “Most exciting part about SolidWorks Mechanical Concept and Inventor_Fusion is the making PDM invisible

More detail on SMC from Lou Gallo.

(matt) New customer portal My.SolidWorks.com goes live today trying to accumulate all the SW data in one place and allow you to arrange it as you see fit. Looks like NetVibes acquisition being used for this. Cloud hosted by DS.

Twitter stream is dead compared with last year.

A lot about Felix Baumgartners’ jump, but no Felix.

… and a 40′ paper airplane…

Devon Sowell: @RobRodriguez so is that 5 or 6 years they been dorking around with this?

and that’s a wrap.

….more from the press conference…

Brian McElyea: “SolidWorks: V6 is not a platform, it is a technology. 3DExperience is the platform”

Sean Dotson: “We never announced SolidWorks V6”. That was the public’s name for it

Daniel Herzberg: Since they started working on the next generation of cad tools, #solidworks has “pivoted” several times to new ideas

UpFront.eZine (Ralph Grabowski) : @SeanDotson The demo shown at SolidWorks Wold 2010 had “Solidworks V6” on the title bar. The public did not name it; Dassault did.

SWW13 has 4500 attendees, fewer than that last event or two. Last year was 5600. The year before was about 5000.

Unheard of. A hands on session that is not booked to capacity within 5 minutes of sign up opening? I think this is a My.SolidWorks.com session.

“At the end of the day, SolidWorks is just a tool”. Hope he understands what that means.

  1. SolidWorks Mechanical Conceptual – Why? Not integrated to SW, different platform, another one year to wait for … It is just an attempt to expose “SW is not dead”, but most probably only V6 customers will be benefited to use it inside the same CAD app.>

  2. SolidWorks Mechanical Conceptual won’t be available for another 9 months-ish? it looks almost identical to what we saw 3 years ago. What’s taking them so long..

  3. That blue 3D platform thingy knob reminds me of the headlight switch thingy knob on my Honda Ridgeline. It’s true, I Experience my headlights, it’s a totally immersive feeling, everyone loves it.

  4. SMC=V6.

It will only work on the Cloud, it has history and direct modelling, and it probablyy does NOT have the Parasolid kernal. And we don’t even get to see a working copy. What a let down.

  5. Solidworks functions for mechanism design; as long as you move the parts very slowly or it wil re arrange itself into a knot. The way to make it work best is to have a kinematic sketch, move the sketch and then let the parts follow the points and lines. For more 3d mechanisms distance mates between spherical balls is most reliable.

Maybe they will get smart and this will be all the V6 is going to be.

  6. I need to see a video going through what it does and where it flows into the whole design process. I agree with you mer that I thought it was going to be more industrial design oriented. That fact that it’s not peaks my interest a bit more because our company would have more use for a mechanism type concept modeller. I still want clarification on the cloud though. If they mean my data is on their servers that’s a deal breaker for me. There is absolutely no way our company would be willing to do that. If by cloud they mean everything is on a server in our company making a mini inter company based cloud then I’m in.

  7. I was under the impression the concept modeler was going to be more industrial design/surfacing focused, or even incorporating some sub-d capabilities. Doesn’t seem even close. Makes my decision to grab modo at 40% off last month a good one I guess.
