Cobra Rendering Contest

Wow!

Rob Rodriguez has done a great job pulling together this rendering contest. There are a ton of great renderings in this months entries. Its obvious that some of these really took a lot of time. If you don’t normally vote in this contest, just go and do it. Rob is allowing each person to vote for 3 different images. Just click on the link on his site and send the email.

We upped the ante a little this month. We’re not giving away a Cobra replica, but we are going to publish somebody’s rendering in my surfacing book due out in April. Thanks to everybody who entered! These are great renderings. The model has some flaws in it, but you all made it look great.

I don’t want to influence the voting, but I do want to make some comments on little details that I’ve seen in some of these images. One thing I’d like to say to the folks who did the renderings: OK, OK, I get the hint. You don’t like my wheels. I modeled my wheels after the BMW M series wheels, some of you replaced them with more period looking spoked wheels with spinners, and some put big low profile 22″ show car wheels on it. I guess my 2001 vintage BMW wheels are kind of middle of the road between the retro and the neo tuners.

Image #2 really integrated the rendering into the scene very well. It also seems he didn’t like my selection of wheels. Also I want to commend this person for cutting down the seat height, which in my model is too high. I think this is the only submitted image where this is done. The depth of field is also nicely done here.

Image #4 goes Lightning McQueen on us. Little lightning bolts and big white walls!

Image #6 has a nice integration into the background, although it seems to be about an inch and a half off the ground. There is something in the windshield of this and several other renderings that I can’t figure out. I’m not sure if its in a background, in the model or exactly what is going on. I think the lighting in particular is very nice.

Image #7 puts the car in a realistic setting, although seeing Hoss’s backside could have been done differently. I like the dash mounted mirror. The very period wire wheels, heat guard on the pipes and the Cali plate looks convincing.

Image #8 does a nice job on the headlight glass and the grill material.

Image #10 puts the Cobra next to a Jag of about the same time frame. I think I recognize the Jag from 3D content central. I have downloaded the same model.

Image #13 didn’t like my grill ring, and he took that out and added some bumper supports. I like the color options shown in this image, and the nice touches on the lights.

Image #14 also has some funk in the windshield. Not sure why this keeps cropping up. This one also changes the wheels, the steering wheel, and did a nice job on headlights, which tripped up a lot of people. I like the little Cobra emblem on the hood.

Image #17 seems confused. Colts and Patriots? The Patriots demolished them a couple weeks ago, didn’t they? Or is it that the Patriots are gonna drive all over the Colts? I was born in Boston, I’ve gotta root for the Patriots.

Image #18 You know, it’s tough to say which I like better, the outdoor scenes or the studio scenes. This one does a nice job with the lighting, the wood dash, and the convincing seat material.

Image #21 is nice and clean. I like the halo around the turn signal, and the little Cobra decal. Nicely done studio scene.

Image #23 added windshield wipers, a woman driving, blurred wheels, a blurred background, glowing headlights. This one also lost the grill ring, exposing a bit of a modeling error around the grill opening in the second angle. Is that a Ford Focus its passing?

Image #24 has some interesting stuff. I was curious to see how many people would add the side vent shields. This one also adds rear view mirrors.

Image #27 is nicely integrated into the scene. Nice stripe and decal work. I particularly like the tire tread treatment on this one.

Image #31 has a lot of additions. The wider wheels give it a very aggressive stance. The Recaro seats are a nice touch, as well as the mirrors. The radiator and hose/fittings are nicely done.

Image #33 is clearly sucking up to me. Virginia plates? Actually, this one is very nicely integrated into the scene.

Thanks again to everyone who entered, and everyone who voted. This contest has turned out some great results, and I cant wait to see which image is going to get published. We can hardly go wrong.
